Where it came from
Released by Jugoton in 1969, this collection serves as a cultural repository for the traditional folk music of the Zagorje region in northern Croatia. During the Yugoslav era, state-owned labels like Jugoton played a pivotal role in documenting regional musical heritage, aiming to preserve local dialects and melodies that were gradually being overshadowed by mainstream pop and international influences. This compilation specifically focuses on the distinctive vocal style and instrumental arrangements inherent to the Zagorske popevke tradition.
The album reflects a concerted effort by musicologists and regional enthusiasts to curate a representative soundscape of the area's rural life and social gatherings. While the record does not feature a singular star composer, the design and production were handled by the Jugoton editorial team, who prioritized authentic, traditional instrumentation and vocal delivery. Upon its release, it was received as a significant archival contribution, finding its primary audience among those seeking to maintain a connection to regional Croatian identity during a period of rapid modernization.
