Where it came from
Released in 1975 on the Kaya-Lami label, Makoti by the group Soul Africa represents a distinct period in South African music history during the mid-1970s. This record emerged during a time when the mbaqanga and soul-influenced sounds were capturing the cultural landscape, blending traditional rhythmic structures with contemporary urban arrangements that resonated deeply within the local townships.
The record serves as a testament to the prolific nature of the Kaya-Lami label, which was instrumental in distributing the works of various vocal groups across the region. While specific design documentation for this individual catalog entry is rare, the aesthetic of these releases typically mirrored the bold, optimistic visual language of the era's music industry, prioritizing accessibility and a clear identity for the artists on the crowded South African radio circuits of the time.
