Where it came from
Released in 2014 under the Kohlhaas label, Mema Verma represents a distinct entry in the discography of Italian sound artist and experimental musician Giovanni Lami. The work emerged from the broader context of the mid-2010s European experimental scene, a period characterized by a deep preoccupation with tape manipulation, environmental recording, and the aesthetic possibilities of sonic decay.
Lami’s design philosophy for the project centers on the tactile exploration of frequency and the limits of audio fidelity. By utilizing specific reel-to-reel tape processes, Lami intentionally pushed the technical boundaries of the Kohlhaas catalog, aiming to craft a record that serves as an immersive study in textures rather than traditional composition. The release was met with appreciation among connoisseurs of minimal sound art for its rigorous focus on the materiality of sound.
