Where it came from
The Educo label, founded by Howard Wells, occupied a specific niche in the mid-20th century educational music market. Rather than competing with the commercial recordings of major symphonic labels, Educo focused on high-fidelity pressings intended for students, music teachers, and institutions. This record, catalog number EP 3010, was produced as a practical reference tool, allowing piano students to study the interpretation of canonical Romantic-era works through Wells's own performances.
The design and curation of the disc reflect the standard pedagogical approach of the era, grouping Mendelssohn’s lyrical miniatures with the structural rigor of Brahms and the technical elegance of Weber. Howard Wells served as both the primary performer and the driving force behind the label, aiming to provide authoritative, cleanly recorded interpretations that avoided the interpretive extremes found in concert-hall recordings. While these pressings were distributed primarily through specialty music shops and educational catalogs, they remain valued by collectors today for their crisp sound quality and the insight they provide into the mid-century conservatory tradition.
