Where it came from
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his Mass in C Minor, K. 427, in 1782 and 1783 during a transitional period of his career in Vienna. Intended as a votive offering following his marriage to Constanze Weber, the work remains famously incomplete, lacking the full Credo and Agnus Dei sections. Its sophisticated, quasi-Baroque counterpoint reflects Mozart's deep study of Bach and Handel, a stylistic departure that marked a significant evolution in his approach to sacred music.
This 1985 release on the His Master's Voice label features a renowned interpretation led by conductor Raymond Leppard with the New Philharmonia Orchestra and the John Alldis Choir. By the mid-1980s, the recording was praised for the inclusion of soprano soloists Kiri Te Kanawa and Ileana Cotrubas, whose vocal performances were noted for their technical clarity and emotional resonance. The recording remains a standard reference for those exploring mid-20th-century approaches to Mozart's choral canon.
