Sinfonie Nr. 3 Es-dur Op. 55 "Eroica" / Egmont-Ouvertüre

This 1977 pressing from His Master's Voice features Eugen Jochum conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, the Eroica, paired with the Egmont Overture. By the time of this recording, Jochum was widely regarded as one of the preeminent interpreters of the Austro-German symphonic repertoire, known for his rigorous yet flexible approach to phrasing and his ability to balance structural clarity with profound emotional weight. This release represents a late-career synthesis of his interpretive maturity with the ensemble's precision.

The recording emerged during a period where His Master's Voice, the flagship label of EMI, was refining its quadraphonic and high-fidelity stereo captures of classic works. The design reflects the label's typical aesthetic of that decade, prioritizing the authoritative presence of the conductor and the historical significance of the compositions. Critical reception of Jochum’s Beethoven cycle during this era frequently noted his commitment to authentic, non-mannered phrasing, establishing these pressings as standard references for collectors seeking a traditional, balanced perspective on Beethoven's middle-period innovations.
