Messe H-Moll = Mass In B Minor = Messe En Si Mineur

The Mass in B Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach is widely considered one of the greatest achievements in the history of Western choral music, though it was never performed in its entirety during the composer's lifetime. Bach compiled the work between 1747 and 1749, drawing from various cantatas and earlier liturgical compositions to create a monumental synthesis of his stylistic development and theological depth. It represents a culmination of the Baroque period, serving as a profound testament to the liturgical tradition of the Lutheran church despite its Catholic Latin text.

This specific recording was produced by Philips and released in 1978, featuring Sir Neville Marriner conducting The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Marriner, a violinist who transitioned to conducting, was renowned for his precision, clarity, and the polished, lyrical sound of his ensemble. This interpretation was lauded by contemporary critics for its elegant pacing and the high caliber of its soloists, including Dame Janet Baker, whose contributions were frequently noted as highlights of the performance, solidifying its place as a staple of the Philips catalog during the height of the analog era.
