Where it came from
Released in 1972, Music of My Mind marked a pivotal transformation in Stevie Wonder's career, signaling the beginning of his 'classic period' at Motown. After gaining creative control over his recordings by renegotiating his contract, Wonder collaborated closely with pioneers Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil to integrate the TONTO synthesizer system into his soul compositions. This album served as a bridge between his earlier Motown sound and the expansive, experimental production that would define his future work.
The album's design and conceptual direction were driven by Wonder's desire to transition from a singles-oriented artist to a writer of cohesive, self-produced studio albums. The cover art, depicting a relaxed Wonder with his signature braids, reflects the intimate and introspective nature of the tracklist. Upon its release, critics noted the sophisticated use of layered keyboards and synthesizers, which received praise for successfully blending progressive electronic elements with traditional R&B sensibilities.
