Where it came from
Released in 1972 on the Vogue label, this record serves as a field recording documenting the traditional musical heritage of the Mandinka people in Guinea. Part of the broader ethnomusicological exploration of West African sounds that gained momentum during the late 1960s and early 1970s, it sought to capture authentic regional folk music before global modernization significantly altered indigenous performance practices.
The album reflects the era's growing scholarly and cultural interest in preserving the music of the Kora, balafon, and traditional vocal storytelling common to the Mandinka culture. Designed with the modest, functional aesthetic common to European world music ethnographic series of the time, the release was intended primarily for archives, academic libraries, and international enthusiasts of African music, receiving recognition largely within specialist circles for its archival contribution to West African musicology.
