Where it came from
Released by Supraphon in 1965 as part of the label's initiative to document the burgeoning contemporary classical scene in Czechoslovakia, this record highlights the experimental spirit of composers Josef Berg, Václav Kučera, and Zdeněk Pololáník. The mid-1960s represented a period of relative creative thaw in the country, allowing composers to move beyond the constraints of socialist realism and engage with avant-garde movements like serialism, aleatory music, and neo-expressionism.
The compositions gathered here reflect the structural rigor and stylistic diversity of the Brno-based avant-garde group. These works, including Pololáník's Variations for Organ and Piano and the chamber dramas of Berg and Kučera, were designed to test the textural possibilities of unconventional instrument pairings. Upon release, the record served as a critical documentation of the intellectual depth and technical experimentation occurring in Czech conservatories, receiving praise from musicologists for its daring approach to percussion and instrumental color.
