Santa Lucia / Zní Z Dálky Zvon

Released by the Czechoslovak label Supraphon in 1971, this single features Waldemar Matuška, one of the most prominent singers in Czechoslovakia during the mid-twentieth century. The record pairs the Italian classic Santa Lucia with the song Zní Z Dálky Zvon, reflecting the popular mid-century tradition of balancing international standards with local arrangements that catered to broad radio and domestic audiences.

Matuška was known for his versatile baritone voice and his ability to navigate various genres, from folk and country to traditional pop. The production values of this era under the state-run Supraphon label often highlighted lush, orchestral backing tracks that emphasized the vocal performance. The design of the sleeve adheres to the minimalist, functionalist aesthetic typical of Supraphon’s singles from the early seventies, prioritizing clear typography and direct portraiture of the artist.
