Where it came from
Released in 1975 under the Prodisc Strasbourg label, O Emmanuel represents a dedicated preservation of liturgical tradition. The recording features the Schola Grégorienne de l'Université de Strasbourg, an ensemble committed to the rigorous study and performance of Gregorian chant, the monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song of the Roman Catholic Church. This album emerged during a period when specialized labels were increasingly focused on documenting regional academic and religious musical heritage.
The album reflects the scholarly approach of the Strasbourg collective, aiming to deliver an authentic interpretation of the O Antiphons, which are traditionally sung during the final days of Advent. The recording process was designed to capture the acoustic properties of a sacred space, emphasizing the clarity and meditative quality inherent in the chant. Upon its release, it was primarily distributed within academic and ecclesiastical circles, serving as both a liturgical resource and a testament to the choir's technical discipline.
