Where it came from
Released by the Romanian state-owned label Electrecord in 1971, this double-LP set documents the traditional Romanian winter solstice rituals and carols known as colindat. The collection was produced during a period when the Romanian government prioritized the ethnographic preservation of rural folklore, framing these ancient, localized customs as essential components of national cultural heritage within a socialist context.
The production reflects an academic approach to sound documentation, aiming to capture authentic regional variations in musical structure and lyrical themes. By archiving these ephemeral performances, Electrecord sought to formalize the study of Romanian folk music for both domestic listeners and international ethnomusicologists, ensuring that the complex, pre-Christian roots of these songs were preserved alongside their later religious adaptations.
