Where it came from
This recording was released in 1990 by Electrecord, the state-owned Romanian record label that served as the primary archive for the country's classical and folk music during the 20th century. The work, Symphony No. 18, Op. 77, represents a notable example of the orchestral output of German composer Wilhelm Berger, whose music was often preserved in Eastern European catalogs due to cultural exchange programs and regional academic traditions.
The production features the Târgu Mureș Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble known for its dedication to the rigorous chamber music repertoire of the Transylvanian region. The collaboration involving conductors Loránt Szalman and Christian Wilhelm Berger reflects a concentrated effort to document the symphonic heritage of the late Romantic and post-Romantic periods, capturing a specific sound aesthetic prevalent in Romanian classical recordings during the final years of the socialist era.
