Provenance

Where it came from

Released on the Résonances label in the mid-1970s, this recording captures Jean-Jacques Grünenwald performing at the cathedral of Soissons. Grünenwald was a prominent figure in the mid-twentieth-century French organ school, serving as the titular organist at Saint-Sulpice in Paris for many years. This specific session highlights the sonic capabilities of the Soissons instrument, an organ with a rich history that has long attracted recitalists looking to explore the tonal depth of the French classical and romantic repertoires.

The album serves as both a showcase for Grünenwald’s technical precision and a testament to his expertise in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. His interpretive approach was known for its adherence to structural clarity and a balanced sense of registration, reflecting the pedagogical traditions of his time. Upon its release, the recording was well-regarded by critics and organ enthusiasts for its high-fidelity capture of the cathedral’s acoustics, securing its place as a respected document of Grünenwald’s recorded legacy.
