Franz Schubert composed his Octet in F major, D. 803, in 1824, commissioned by the amateur clarinetist Count Ferdinand von Troyer. Designed in the tradition of the classical divertimento and modeled after Beethoven's Septet, Op. 20, the work was intended to balance the structural rigor of the string ensemble with the warmth and color of the wind instruments. Despite its now-celebrated status as a centerpiece of the chamber repertoire, it was not published until 1853, long after Schubert's death.
