Released in 1984 under the East German label Capriccio, this recording features Hannes Kästner performing various works by Johann Sebastian Bach on the organ at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Kästner, who served as the organist at the Thomaskirche from 1963 to 1983, was deeply integrated into the traditions of Bach's own musical home, lending the performance an authentic, site-specific character that reflects the acoustic environment for which much of this music was originally intended.

The album serves as a testament to the preservation of German Baroque performance traditions during the late twentieth century. By selecting major works such as the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565, and the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, the release aimed to showcase the technical capability of both the organist and the instrument.
