Where it came from
Released in 1981 under the Nnakwe Records label, this recording captures the rhythmic traditions of the Otu Onye Loshe Onwu Dancing Group from Ubulu-Uku, located in the former Bendel State of Nigeria. At the time, regional labels played a vital role in documenting and disseminating indigenous musical performances that served as the heartbeat of community celebrations, funeral rites, and social gatherings in the Igbo-speaking areas of the region.
The production reflects the raw, field-recorded aesthetic common to local Nigerian independent labels of the early 1980s, which prioritized cultural preservation over studio polish. These recordings were intended to capture the interplay between traditional percussion, vocal chants, and the specific kinetic energy of the group’s dance movements. While such records were primarily distributed within local markets and community circles, they remain significant artifacts for ethnomusicologists studying the continuity of traditional dance-music troupes during a period of rapid modernization in Nigeria.
