Where it came from
Released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1957, this record is a quintessential example of the label's mid-century commitment to high-fidelity documentation of the Germanic classical repertoire. The disc features the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Fritz Lehmann, captured during a period when the label was perfecting its signature expansive and atmospheric studio sound to showcase Beethoven's dramatic overtures and the complex, experimental choral fantasy.
The sleeve design reflects the minimalist aesthetic favored by Deutsche Grammophon during the late 1950s, prioritizing clarity and the iconic yellow label identity. This release was part of a broader archival push to provide listeners with authoritative interpretations of Beethoven, emphasizing structural precision and the emotive tension characteristic of the composer's middle and late periods as interpreted by conductors associated with the post-war European radio and concert traditions.
