Where it came from
Released in 1983 as the follow-up to McCartney's Tug of War, Pipes of Peace was recorded during the same sessions as its predecessor with producer George Martin. The album sought to blend sophisticated pop production with McCartney's signature melodic sensibility, featuring collaborations with Michael Jackson and a distinct shift toward synthesized textures. The inclusion of the title track as a standalone single aimed to deliver a message of global harmony during the height of the Cold War, reflecting the era's pervasive interest in peace movements.
The album cover art, featuring a painting by Brian Clarke, serves as a departure from the photographic covers McCartney utilized for much of his solo career. Clarke, a celebrated artist known for his stained glass and architectural work, crafted an image that leans into soft, atmospheric symbolism, echoing the titular theme of peace. While the album saw significant commercial success and spawned a chart-topping duet with Jackson, critics at the time offered mixed reviews, often noting a desire for the more experimental edge McCartney had displayed earlier in his career.
