Where it came from
Released by the Austrian label Viennaphon during the mid-1950s, this 78-rpm record captures the international reach of mid-century popular music. Claudius Alzner was a prominent bandleader in Vienna, known for adapting contemporary global hits for the ballroom and cafe circuit. This selection reflects the era's fascination with light orchestral arrangements, blending exotic-themed novelties like 'Port Au Prince' with popular European standards.
The recording showcases the signature polished, danceable style that defined Alzner's work for Viennaphon. By interpreting tracks like 'The Poor People Of Paris'—originally a French chanson popularized internationally by Les Baxter—Alzner sought to bring a refined, rhythmic sensibility to the standard pop repertoire of the day. It remains a representative artifact of the post-war European record industry's effort to provide accessible, high-quality music for domestic listening and dance halls.
