Where it came from
Released in 1968 on the Solid State label, this collaboration brought together the legendary jazz vocalist Joe Williams with the powerhouse Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. The album was born out of a desire to bridge the gap between big band swing and blues-infused vocal performance, capitalizing on the established chemistry of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis ensemble, which had become a mainstay of the New York jazz scene following their residency at the Village Vanguard.
The album reflects the sophisticated arranging style of Thad Jones, who sought to modernize the big band sound through complex harmonies and tight, dynamic charts. The production features a clean, resonant sound characteristic of the late 1960s Solid State catalog. Critically, the record was well-received for maintaining the high-energy, technically proficient spirit of the orchestra while allowing Williams to deliver his signature soulful interpretations of jazz standards.
