Where it came from
Released in 1966 on the Solid State label, this collaboration captured the intersection of jazz vocal tradition and the contemporary big band sound of the mid-sixties. The record was produced during the formative years of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, an ensemble that had recently established itself as the Monday night house band at the Village Vanguard in New York City.
The album serves as a showcase for Joe Williams, who brought his blues-inflected vocal style to the sophisticated, intricate arrangements authored by Thad Jones. The design reflects the mid-century modern aesthetic favored by Solid State at the time, prioritizing bold typography and stark photography to signal a transition from traditional swing to the progressive orchestral jazz that defined the group's tenure.
