Where it came from
Released in 1975 by the French label Editions Studio S.M., Prières 4 (Folk Psaumes) emerged from a movement within the post-Vatican II Catholic Church to modernize liturgical music. Raymond Fau, Jean Debruynne, and Gaëtan De Courrèges were pivotal figures in this shift, focusing on accessibility through folk-inspired melodies and contemporary French lyrics that moved away from traditional Gregorian chants toward a more personal, congregational style of worship.
The album reflects the era's broader interest in 'folk-religious' music, which sought to bridge the gap between secular popular culture and spiritual expression. The design and production are characteristic of the Studio S.M. catalog, which prioritized clear vocal delivery and acoustic arrangements meant to be easily replicated by youth groups and small parishes. These recordings were instrumental in establishing a new repertoire for French-speaking Catholic communities, emphasizing communal singing and meditative reflection.
