Released in the late 1950s, Red River Rock was the debut single for the Toledo-based instrumental rock group Johnny and the Hurricanes. The track is a driving, organ-led reimagining of the traditional folk song Red River Valley, which captured the nascent energy of the rock and roll era by blending high-energy saxophone lines with Bill 'Little Bo' Savic's prominent Hammond organ riffs. The B-side, Reveille Rock, followed a similar structural approach by reworking a traditional military bugle call into a rhythmic, danceable instrumental composition.

The record was produced during a period when instrumental rock was gaining significant traction on the American charts, providing a clean, melodic alternative to the vocal-heavy hits of the time. Johnny and the Hurricanes were characterized by their tight, punchy arrangements and a heavy reliance on the organ, a sound that heavily influenced the emerging surf rock genre.
