Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1953 by Capitol Records, this album features the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Band under the direction of Merle Evans. Evans, often referred to as the Stokowski of the circus world, served as the bandleader for the Greatest Show on Earth for over fifty years. The recording serves as a historical document of the brass-heavy, high-tempo musical style essential to coordinating complex circus acts and maintaining the frantic energy of the big top.

The album was produced during a period when Capitol Records was expanding its catalog to include authentic Americana and regional soundscapes. The arrangement reflects the specific needs of live circus performance, emphasizing precision and rhythm over traditional orchestral nuance. While it remains a niche record today, it is highly regarded by enthusiasts of band music and circus history for preserving the specific sonic landscape of the mid-century American circus tradition.
