Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1951 by Capitol Records, this recording captures the quintessential sounds of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus band. The album was produced during an era when the circus was a dominant force in American popular entertainment, serving as a sonic archive of the brass-heavy marches and fanfares that defined the mid-century big top experience.

The record features performances conducted under the direction of Merle Evans, the legendary bandleader who served as the musical director for the circus for over half a century. Evans is credited with maintaining the high-energy, precise tempo required to synchronize live music with complex aerial and animal acts, and this recording is widely regarded by music historians as an authoritative document of the American circus tradition.
