Where it came from
Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Septet in E-flat major, Op. 20, in 1799 and premiered it in Vienna in 1800. Designed as a chamber work in the style of a divertimento, it became one of the most celebrated and commercially successful pieces of his early career, much to the composer's eventual chagrin as he grew to consider it less significant than his later, more introspective works.
This specific 1964 release by the Philharmonisches Oktett Berlin on the Deutsche Grammophon label represents a definitive mid-century interpretation of the septet. The ensemble, composed of principal players from the Berlin Philharmonic, was renowned for its technical precision and adherence to the German Romantic performance tradition, receiving critical acclaim for bringing a refined, symphonic clarity to Beethoven's lighthearted and melodic score.
