Where it came from
Released in 1981 by Deutsche Grammophon, this Opern-Gala recording captures Placido Domingo at the height of his international acclaim. The collection functions as a curated showcase of his versatility across diverse operatic repertoires, ranging from the dramatic intensity of Verdi’s Ernani and Il Trovatore to the lyrical demands of Bizet and Meyerbeer. The selection serves as a testament to the symbiotic partnership between Domingo and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which benefited significantly from the refined, precise leadership of conductor Carlo Maria Giulini.
The album reflects the high production standards of Deutsche Grammophon during the early 1980s, prioritizing a clean, balanced soundstage that allows the Los Angeles Philharmonic to maintain a rich, symphonic texture behind Domingo’s expansive vocal phrasing. Critically, the recording was received as a definitive portrait of the tenor’s technical range, solidifying his status as a premier interpreter of both Italian and French operatic styles. It remains a hallmark of the era’s commitment to studio-perfected classical performance.
