Where it came from
Johannes Brahms composed his String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 18, in 1860, during a period when he was actively exploring the textural possibilities of chamber music beyond the standard quartet format. The work is noted for its youthful lyricism and structural clarity, reflecting the influence of his mentor, Robert Schumann, while establishing the distinct, rich harmonic language that would characterize Brahms's mature chamber output.
This specific recording was produced under the Die Stimme Seines Herrn label, a German iteration of the HMV imprint. It features the violinist Yehudi Menuhin alongside a distinguished group of chamber musicians, including his sister Hephzibah Menuhin on piano for the accompanying Scherzo. The ensemble brings a historically informed approach to the work, emphasizing the interplay between the two violas and cellos that Brahms meticulously arranged to achieve the sextet’s characteristic orchestral depth.
