Sinfonien Nr. 31 D-Dur „Auf Dem Anstand” Und Nr. 73 D-Dur „Die Jagd”

This recording features two of Joseph Haydn's notable symphonies, No. 31, nicknamed 'Hornsignal' or 'Auf dem Anstand', and No. 73, known as 'La Chasse' or 'The Hunt'. Released under the His Master's Voice label, the performance captures the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Leopold Ludwig. The selection highlights the descriptive, programmatic qualities Haydn infused into his work, with these specific symphonies showcasing his mastery of orchestration and his ability to incorporate hunting motifs that were characteristic of 18th-century courtly musical traditions.

The production serves as a testament to the mid-20th-century approach to historical performance practice, reflecting the technical standards of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra during that era. Leopold Ludwig was well-regarded for his steady and balanced approach to the Classical repertoire. This release, part of the extensive HMV catalog, was aimed at listeners interested in authoritative, traditional interpretations of Haydn's symphonic canon, offering a clear and well-balanced sound stage that emphasizes the interplay between the horn sections and the string ensemble.
