Songs Of French-Canada = Chansons Du Folklore Canadien-Francais

Released in 1960 by Folkways Records, this album was part of the label's commitment to archiving global folk traditions. Hélène Baillargeon, a prominent French-Canadian folklorist and singer, collaborated with Alan Mills, a well-known Canadian folk musician and storyteller, to curate and perform a selection of traditional French-Canadian songs. The production sought to preserve the linguistic and musical heritage of Quebec and surrounding regions for an international audience, contextualized within the post-war folk revival movement that prioritized authentic cultural documentation.

The album reflects the meticulous documentation standards typical of Folkways founder Moses Asch. Its design and liner notes were created to serve as an educational resource, providing listeners with both the melodies and the cultural history behind the repertoire. The collection was well-received by ethnomusicologists and folk enthusiasts for its educational value and the genuine chemistry between the two performers, serving as a primary reference for French-Canadian folk music during the mid-20th century.
