Streichquartett "Der Tod Und Das Mädchen" = String Quartet "Death And The Maiden" / Quartettsatz C-moll = In C Minor

Franz Schubert composed his String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, known as 'Death and the Maiden', in 1824 during a period of profound physical illness and personal reflection. The work draws its title and thematic material from his earlier lied of the same name, weaving a haunting, cyclical meditation on mortality that remains a cornerstone of the Romantic chamber music repertoire. The inclusion of the Quartettsatz in C minor on this release provides a bridge to Schubert's earlier, more turbulent creative experiments.

This specific 1984 Philips release features the Quartetto Italiano, an ensemble celebrated for its intellectual rigor and tonal homogeneity. By the time of these recordings, the group had cemented its reputation for definitive interpretations of the classical canon, characterized by a refined balance and a deep, nuanced understanding of Austro-German structure. Their approach to these Schubert works is noted for its structural clarity, prioritizing a disciplined, objective elegance that eschews overtly sentimental readings in favor of stark, emotional precision.
