Streichquartette D-moll Op. 76,2 "Quinten-Quartett" / C-dur Op. 76,3 "Kaiser-Quartett" / B-dur Op. 76,4

The Budapest String Quartet recorded these masterpieces of Joseph Haydn's Op. 76 set for the Philips label during their mid-20th-century tenure, a period recognized for the ensemble's transition from their earlier European roots to their definitive status in the United States. Haydn originally composed these quartets in 1797 as a pinnacle of the Classical form, reflecting a period of intense creative maturity where he mastered the balance between intellectual rigor and thematic innovation, particularly in the innovative 'Quinten' and the noble 'Kaiser' quartets.

The recording itself highlights the Budapest String Quartet’s signature approach, characterized by a refined, linear clarity and a cohesive structural discipline that became the gold standard for mid-century chamber music performance. Released under the Philips banner, this catalog number represents the label's commitment to high-fidelity documentation of the standard repertoire, emphasizing the ensemble's ability to maintain a transparent, balanced texture that honors the elegance of Haydn's original compositions while showcasing the warmth of the ensemble's collective tone.
