Streichquartette / String Quartets / Quatuors À Cordes: Op. 76,3 "Kaiserquartett" - Op. 74,3 "Reiterquartett"

This 1982 release features the Alban Berg Quartett performing two of Joseph Haydn's most iconic string quartets, the Emperor and the Rider. Haydn composed these works in the late 18th century during the pinnacle of the Classical period, establishing the string quartet as a definitive chamber music genre. The choice to pair the lyrical warmth of the Op. 76, No. 3 with the driving energy of the Op. 74, No. 3 highlights the technical versatility required of any ensemble tackling the repertoire.

The Alban Berg Quartett, formed in Vienna in 1970, was highly regarded for its precision and commitment to the Viennese tradition, making them ideal interpreters for Haydn's compositions. This particular Telefunken pressing was part of a broader effort to capture the ensemble's rigorous approach to classical structure. Upon its release, the recording was praised for its transparency and the quartet's ability to balance period-appropriate restraint with the expressive depth that became the group's hallmark.
