Where it came from
Released in 1975 by Telefunken, this recording captures the Alban Berg Quartett during their formative years as they established their reputation for technical precision and interpretative depth. The album features Schubert’s String Quartets No. 13 in A minor, 'Rosamunde', and No. 9 in G minor, two cornerstones of the Romantic chamber music repertoire that showcase the composer’s signature blend of lyrical melancholy and dramatic structural tension.
The Alban Berg Quartett was founded in Vienna in 1970, and by the mid-1970s, they were widely recognized for their rigorous approach to the Viennese classical tradition. Their collaboration with Telefunken during this period emphasized a clean, balanced sonic aesthetic that highlighted the ensemble's tight internal coordination. Critics of the time praised the recordings for their clarity and the quartet’s ability to navigate Schubert’s complex emotional landscapes without succumbing to excessive sentimentality.
