Where it came from
Released in 1982 by the German label Intercord, this collection features the esteemed Melos Quartett performing foundational chamber works by Bedřich Smetana, Leoš Janáček, Hugo Wolf, and Anton Bruckner. The set represents a period of rigorous dedication to the central European repertoire, capturing the ensemble during their prime years when they were internationally recognized for their technical precision and deep interpretative insight into the romantic and early modern traditions.
The Melos Quartett, founded in 1965 in Stuttgart, was highly regarded for their balance of structural clarity and expressive warmth. This specific release served as a significant addition to the label's classical catalog, aiming to showcase the group's ability to navigate the emotional turbulence of Janáček and the lyrical complexity of Smetana. Critics at the time praised the recordings for their cohesive ensemble work, reinforcing the Melos Quartett's reputation as one of the most influential string quartets of the late twentieth century.
