String Quartet In D Minor "Death And The Maiden" / "Quartettsatz" In C Minor

Franz Schubert composed his String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, known as 'Death and the Maiden,' in 1824 following a period of profound health struggles. The work is deeply influenced by his earlier lied of the same name, reflecting a poignant confrontation with mortality. The 'Quartettsatz' in C minor, composed in 1820, serves as a testament to his burgeoning mastery of the chamber music form, characterized by a dramatic, driving intensity that foreshadows the structural maturity seen in his final years.

This 1978 release features the Amadeus Quartet, an ensemble renowned for their precision and cohesive interpretative style. Under the Deutsche Grammophon label, this recording reflects the label's commitment to high-fidelity documentation of the central European canon. The Amadeus Quartet, founded in 1947, was celebrated for bringing a refined, articulate, and deeply considered approach to the standard repertoire, and this particular pressing remains a standard reference point for listeners exploring Schubert's transition into late-romantic emotional territory.
