String Quartet In D Minor 'Death And The Maiden' / String Quartet In C Minor 'Quartett-Satz'

Franz Schubert composed his String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, known as Death and the Maiden, in 1824 while struggling with declining health, leading him to weave the somber melody of his earlier eponymous lied into the work's second movement. The Quartettsatz in C minor, composed in 1820, serves as a powerful standalone movement that exemplifies Schubert’s transition into his mature, more expansive instrumental style. Together, these works are staples of the Romantic chamber repertoire, reflecting a poignant confrontation with mortality.

This 1979 release by the Allegri String Quartet on the Argo label captures the ensemble's characteristic clarity and balanced approach to Schubert’s complex emotional landscape. As one of the prominent British quartets of the mid-20th century, the Allegri were known for their refined technique and deep musical intuition. The recording was released as part of the Argo ZK series, a label imprint noted for high-fidelity production standards that helped define the definitive sound of classical recordings during that era.
