Where it came from
Franz Schubert composed his String Quartet No. 14, widely known as 'Death and the Maiden', in 1824 following a period of intense personal struggle and failing health. The work is titled after his earlier 1817 lied of the same name, which forms the theme of the second movement's variations. It remains one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire, celebrated for its dramatic intensity, structural complexity, and the haunting, fatalistic emotional landscape Schubert crafted during this turbulent chapter of his life.
This 2018 release by Vinyl Passion Classical features the legendary Amadeus Quartet, an ensemble renowned for their precision and stylistic mastery of the classical canon. The recording captures their signature approach to Schubert, balancing structural rigor with profound lyricism. This reissue serves as a modern archival presentation of these mid-20th-century performances, providing listeners with a high-fidelity opportunity to revisit the Amadeus Quartet's definitive interpretations of the D Minor quartet and the incomplete but brilliant 'Quartettsatz'.
