Where it came from
Released in 2014 by MOGA Records, this 7-inch vinyl single reimagines the iconic Super Mario Bros. overworld theme as a piece of early 20th-century jazz. The project emerged from a niche interest in period-accurate musical arrangements applied to modern pop culture subjects, aiming to blend the nostalgic 8-bit aesthetic with the stylistic sensibilities of the ragtime and vaudeville eras.
The recording features the collaborative efforts of The Handy Dandy Boys, led by John Reynolds, alongside vocalist Janet Klein. The design and arrangement were crafted to evoke a sense of playfulness consistent with Klein’s repertoire, which typically focuses on reviving obscure songs from the 1920s and 1930s. The record was produced for collectors who appreciate the intersection of chiptune culture and traditional Americana jazz, serving as a stylistic experiment in musical adaptation.
