Where it came from
Suor E Chão was released in 1988 on the J.R. Discos label, emerging during a period when regional Brazilian music was seeking broader distribution. Renato Régis, an artist deeply rooted in the musical traditions of the Northeast, crafted this work to reflect the interplay between labor, landscape, and the cultural identity of his home region. The production serves as a testament to the localized independent recording efforts that defined much of the Brazilian music scene in the late 1980s.
The design and composition of the album lean into the earthy, acoustic aesthetic common to the era's regional folk and baião records. Régis aimed for an authentic sound that prioritized lyrical storytelling and rhythmic integrity, capturing the essence of the 'suor e chão'—the sweat and the soil—from which the songs drew their inspiration. While the release remained a niche offering outside of regional markets, it is regarded by collectors of Brazilian independent music as a sincere representation of the artist's commitment to his roots.
