Symphonie Nr.3 C-moll, Op. 78 «Orgel-Symphonie»

Composed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886, the Third Symphony—frequently called the Organ Symphony—was the final entry in the composer's cycle of symphonies. It was designed to showcase both the symphonic orchestra and the immense power of the pipe organ, a combination that Saint-Saëns balanced with deliberate, structural complexity. The work was intended as a tribute to the legacy of Franz Liszt, who had recently passed, and it remains a cornerstone of the French Romantic repertoire for its dramatic intensity and technical demands on both performer and instrument.

This 1974 recording on the RCA Red Seal label (ARL1-0484) brought together the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy and organist Virgil Fox. Ormandy was renowned for the polished, lush orchestral sound of the Philadelphia ensemble, often referred to as the Philadelphia Sound. When paired with Fox, a virtuoso known for his flamboyant and technically precise organ performances, the resulting interpretation was received by critics as a monumental, high-fidelity experience that maximized the sonic capabilities of the organ-orchestra synthesis.
