Taillefer And Divertimento After Couperin

Released by Urania Records in the early 1950s, this recording captures two distinct works by Richard Strauss: his 1903 choral ballad 'Taillefer' and the orchestral suite 'Divertimento after Couperin.' The label was instrumental in introducing American audiences to mid-century European performances, particularly those originating from Germany and Austria in the immediate post-war era, providing a vital bridge for classical music enthusiasts to access these recordings.

The production features a distinguished roster of performers, including soprano Maria Cebotari, tenor Walther Ludwig, and baritone Hans Hotter, supported by the Rudolf Lamy-Chor. 'Taillefer' serves as a dramatic centerpiece, showcasing Strauss's mastery of large-scale vocal writing, while the 'Divertimento' reflects his neoclassical leanings. Critics of the period generally regarded these Urania pressings as significant, though sonically variable, efforts to document the German symphonic tradition during a time of international cultural rebuilding.
