Taillefer And Divertimento After Couperin

Released in 1952 by Urania Records, this recording captures a unique moment in the post-war American classical music market, which was then undergoing a rapid expansion due to the burgeoning popularity of the long-playing vinyl format. Urania, a label specialized in distributing European radio recordings and performances to American audiences, chose to pair Richard Strauss's complex choral work Taillefer with his neoclassical Divertimento after Couperin. This release provided listeners with high-fidelity access to works that were often absent from standard concert repertoires at the time.

The performance features a notable ensemble led by the Rudolf Lamy Choir, alongside soloists Maria Cebotari, Walther Ludwig, and Hans Hotter. The production reflects the mid-century European classical recording tradition, emphasizing a clear, resonant capture of operatic vocalism balanced against Strauss's intricate orchestral textures. While the Divertimento showcases Strauss’s sophisticated adaptation of 18th-century forms, Taillefer highlights his late-Romantic dramatic ambition, making this LP a significant entry for collectors interested in the post-war dissemination of German orchestral music.
