Where it came from
Released in 1979 by the Romanian label Electrecord, this recording serves as a vital document of the Táncház (dance house) movement that emerged in the 1970s. The movement sought to preserve and revive authentic Hungarian folk music and dance traditions, which were then being marginalized by state-sponsored cultural standardization. By gathering field recordings from regions such as Gagyi, Mezőség, Szék, and Kalotaszeg, the record acted as a bridge between rural practitioners and the urban youth who were eager to learn these traditional forms.
The album reflects the raw, improvisational aesthetic of village music, prioritizing the archival quality of the strings and vocal performances over polished studio production. The design is characteristic of Eastern Bloc folk compilations of the era, focusing on ethnographic accuracy rather than commercial branding. It remains highly regarded among ethnomusicologists and folk enthusiasts for capturing a specific moment when Hungarian cultural identity in Transylvania was being rediscovered and actively reconstructed through communal dance and music.
