Lore

Why it matters

This record serves as an essential archival document of the Táncház (dance house) movement, a grassroots cultural revival that sought to preserve authentic Transylvanian folk music. By capturing the traditional regional styles of Gagyi, Mezőség, and Szék, this Electrecord release helped bridge the gap between rural musicians and a younger generation of urban enthusiasts committed to safeguarding Hungarian folk heritage.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1980 by the Romanian state-owned label Electrecord, this recording emerged during a pivotal moment for the Táncház (dance house) movement. This cultural phenomenon sought to preserve and revitalize authentic rural folk music and dance traditions from Hungarian communities in Transylvania, serving as both an artistic revival and a quiet form of cultural preservation during a period of significant political suppression.

The compilation features field-style recordings documenting traditional music styles from the Kis-Küküllő, Mezőség, and Kalotaszeg regions, along with specific village styles like Szék. These recordings were instrumental in introducing urban youth to the complex string-band traditions of the Hungarian minority in Romania, emphasizing unvarnished, authentic performance practices over the stylized orchestral arrangements that had previously dominated state-sanctioned folk music.
