Where it came from
Released in 1975 under the Philips label, this recording features the Quartetto Italiano performing three cornerstones of the classical string quartet repertoire. The disc captures the ensemble's refined approach to Mozart's K.458, affectionately known as 'The Hunt' for its horn-call-like opening, alongside Beethoven's introspective 'Serioso' Quartet and the dramatic tension of Schubert's unfinished 'Quartettsatz'.
The Quartetto Italiano, active from 1945 to 1980, was widely celebrated for its technical precision and warm, blended sound. During their long-standing partnership with Philips, they became definitive interpreters of the Germanic quartet tradition. This specific pressing reflects the label's focus on high-fidelity captures of chamber music, characterized by clear acoustic staging that highlights the nuanced interplay between the four string players.
