The Messiah: Hallelujah Chorus / Ave Verum KV 618

Released in 1960 by Deutsche Grammophon, this 45 RPM single represents a specific selection of Western classical masterworks intended to bring high-fidelity recordings of choral staples to a broader domestic audience. The pairing of George Frideric Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus reflects the label's commitment to the post-war German classical tradition, featuring prestige ensembles such as the Munich Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The production sought to balance technical precision with the solemn, majestic atmosphere required for these compositions. By utilizing the extensive resources of the Bavarian musical institutions under conductors like Rudolf Lamy, the recording reflects the mid-century European focus on institutional, ensemble-driven performances. It was received as a standard, reliable interpretation within Deutsche Grammophon’s extensive catalog, catering to the growing post-war market for affordable, accessible classical music recordings.
