The Turgid Miasma Of Existence

The Turgid Miasma of Existence was released in 1987 on the independent Lamia label, marking a transitional period for the Sydney-based band The Celibate Rifles. Emerging from the vibrant Australian underground punk and pub rock scene, the group was known for its raw, politically charged energy and a sound that bridged the gap between post-punk intensity and garage rock sensibilities. This record captured the band during a phase of creative evolution, as they sought to refine their sonic identity while maintaining the grit that earned them a loyal following in the local circuit.

The album reflects the band's penchant for sharp, observational lyricism and driving instrumentation. While the name and catalog number (D-LP-1052) identify it as a distinct entry in their discography, the release is often discussed in the context of their broader influence on the international indie rock movement of the late 1980s. Critics of the time noted the album as a testament to the band's refusal to conform to mainstream production trends, favoring an authentic, live-feel recording approach that became a hallmark of their work throughout their active years.
